Peru will impose a new blockade but mining will be allowed during the blockade

Peru's copper miners will be boosted by a new blockade to stop the rising number of new pneumonia infections, but will allow key industries such as mining to continue to operate. Peru is the world's second-largest copper producer. Most parts of Peru, including the capital, Lima, will resume strict travel and movement restrictions for two weeks from Sunday. But the Peruvian government said Thursday that mining, fishing and construction and basic services, including food and pharmaceuticals, would continue from Jan. 31 to Feb. 14. The mining sector is the engine of the economy and accounts for 60 per cent of Peru's total exports. Peru has more than 1.1 million confirmed cases of new pneumonia and more than 40,000 deaths, according to official figures. The blockades include Ancash's mining area, where Copper Miner Antamina works; the Las Bambas mining area of Apurimmg; the site of the pasco-volcan Operation Project; and ica-the Hierroperú site of Shougang, China.
